Career guidance is never an easy job, especially when we live in an ever-changing world, and there are future careers that have not been created yet. Why do young people have difficulties knowing themselves? and What should young people need to prepare to step into the VUCA world? Let's find out key insights from Mariane Power's sharing (Co-Founder and Director of The Posify Group) on the webinar #4: How to choose a career that's right for you?

About Mariane Power and The Posify Group

Mariane Power is a psychologist, a Co-founder & Director of The Posify Group, a socially conscious education company helping young people prepare for the ever-changing world by equipping them with a sense of purpose and the transferable skills they'll need to thrive. She has over 15 years of consulting, facilitation, and corporate training for personal and strategic growth. Her experience as a corporate leadership consultant and a psychologist in a child, adolescent, and family clinic fuels her understanding of the necessary skills for 21st-century success. Her commitment to sharing the science of purpose, potential, and impact equip others with the clarity and confidence they need to realize their most meaningful goals for themselves, our world, and its people.

Mariane has been my top 3 favorite guests during years organizing and hosting talk shows. She has a passion for discovering herself, has excellent academic records, and is expected to become a doctor but gives up everything to become an actor. Then, she turns to commit to the path of psychological research and support young people to develop themselves for 15 years. I sincerely feel connected to her, maybe because I'm also a kid at heart who isn't afraid to explore different sides of myself and the world. It's a pleasure to talk to Mariane on the right day of Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20, and to celebrate the National Career Conference organized by Song An ❤️

Know yourself: The importance of Indentity

In webinar #4, Mariane Power shared valuable insights on self-reflection and the importance of identity. She helps us look deeper into our vulnerable sides.

Question: Why do young people have difficulties knowing themselves?

Answer:

When we are young, we are often influenced a lot by family, friends, teachers, society, and different cultural backgrounds.

With so much information exploding in the media these days, it can be difficult for young people to reflect on their inner selves.

There are so many things that distract us. You might wonder about 1001 things in life, like:

  • What is that person doing? How do I catch them?

  • What are they aimed at doing?

  • How do I rate myself against those standards?

The good side of this is that we can learn about the needs of others and find ways to help them instead of just focusing on our own needs. Thinking about other people helps you to know:

  • Who are you?

  • What skills, strengths, and values do you have?

  • How are they different from other people?

  • Who can you influence?

However, if we get caught up in external factors to evaluate ourselves, we may lose our inherent qualities. When we are too focused on others, it is easy to indulge in endless comparisons. There is always a life more beautiful, more successful than ours.

So, refocusing on ourselves and developing our identity will be core to knowing ourselves clearly, understanding how we fit into this world, how we need to interact, and how to make a difference.

Discovering your identity, seeing the world, and finding ways to fit in can make a huge difference. At this point, our questions will become:

  • What is the purpose of what we are doing?

  • What do we want to stand for?

  • Who do we influence, and what goals should we set toward that?

At the end of the day, the sense of purpose and impact are what lead us to do what we're doing.
